At Meta, as a Senior Product Designer, I’ve been shaping how businesses connect with people through ads on WhatsApp Status, which drives 9.1B+ ads revenue – from launching new ad formats, to refining the end-to-end ad experience and raising the quality bar through hands-on dogfooding and shipping UI bugs.

CONTEXT
WhatsApp is a messaging platform, connecting people with their friends, family, and business across 3B+ users.
WhatsApp is a private communication tool, which is known for privacy. One of the key selling points of WhatsApp is an end-to-end encryption, meaning messages can only be read by the sender and receiver, not even Meta can see the content.
OPPORTUNITY
WhatsApp’s massive user base was under-monetized. Revenue was limited to marketing messaging only.

Unlocking new ad placements on WhatsApp Status through designing the ad formats that fits with WhatsApp’s native experience well, optimizing the ad performance through experiments, and improving ad quality through providing the ad control experience.
